The Future Picture

From operating systems to video games, slick graphics are now the norm, as the chips behind the visuals grow up.

The gaming industry has led the way in the development of graphics
Graphics chipsets are taking over the handling of increasingly complex computational tasks traditionally dealt with by the central processing unit (CPU) in a computer.
The CPU can be thought of as an office manager, concerned with the day-to-day operations of a computer. It is a jack of all trades and master of none and spends its time completing many different sorts of tasks.
Before now the graphics processing unit (GPU) in a computer has done one thing and one thing only - crunch big numbers to display ever-more realistic graphics.
But now that number-crunching specialisation is helping the CPU perform the computational heavy-lifting.
"We have taken some of the functions from the CPU over to the GPU and that allows the CPU to be freed up to continue its daily functions," said Darren Grasby from chip-maker AMD which owns graphics specialist ATI.
Super computer
The development of graphics chips has been driven by the demands of gamers for higher resolution visuals.

Nvidia's boss says GPU has changed a user's computing experience
Jen-Hsun Hwang, Nvidia co-founder and chief executive, said that users' computing experience had become more sophisticated over time.
"The GPU is, in a way, a super computer on a chip and over the years we have made them more and more programmable.
"So all of a sudden this super computer could be used for all kinds of applications, whether it is Photoshop or Premiere, to accelerate your video editing or making it possible to transcode your video from HD to your iPhone," said Mr Hwang.
That programmability is helping to take the GPU beyond impressive graphics and gives it the potential to power some much more unusual applications.
For instance, the parallel processing power of a GPU is helping give it a role inside cars.
"Initially the requirement was for the infotainment business to give you what I would say is an iPod lookalike in look and feel," said Eddie Seymour from graphics chip specialist Nvidia. "As navigation has become very 3D orientated - all of the maps are going that way."
6D system
The next step for this technology could see it powering integrated virtual dashboards that are fully customisable to show only the instruments a driver wants to see.

The next step for the tech could be integrated visual dashboards in cars
However, some see the true potential of these graphical chips to fundamentally change the way we drive.
6D Vision is a sensing system that uses tracing points to calculate a car's distance from other vehicles or pedestrians.
It uses two car-mounted cameras to help build up a picture for the onboard computer of the size of other objects on the road and how near or far away they are.
"We used to track 1,000 points," said Clemens Rabe from car maker Daimler, "with the GPU we are tracking 10,000 points and analysing them with the CPU in parallel."
"And we can use this in a combination with additional hardware to improve our algorithms even more," Mr Rabe explained.
Mr Rabe said that such a GPU-driven system could eventually be used to "warn the driver, or even take some actions to prevent a collision."

Search MP3s, Books, FTPs, Rapidshare & Torrents

Wow ! It seems I’m just in love with alternative search engines, isn’t it. Today I talked about how search.io lets you search different sites in tabs on the same page. And here I come across another cool alternative search engine named Njouba which lets you
- search the web and find free mp3s online
- search for videos on video sharing sites
- search images
- search for files on FTPs
- search web for PDF e-books
- search Rapidshare content
- search torrents
All of these search tools can be accessed in different tabs on a single page.
ftp search sites
It shows the links to the files on the respective sites. This could be a very useful search site for sure.
In the following screenshot, I searched the rapidshare tab for the query ‘Dark Knight’ and it immediately showed the related downloadable files in Rapidshare.
search mp3 online
Certainly a handy search tool. It is also available in different languages. Give it a shot.

Can You Look At these Websites?

BLENDER.ORG (www.blender.org)

While big budget animated films are all the rage for the likes of Disney and Pixar, you can actually create your own low budget production using open source software that you can download for free if you visit blender.org.

Download and installation is pretty straight forward. What is more daunting by far is launching the package and trying to figure out your way around the interface. If you are familiar with 3D animation software, it will all look pretty familiar. And more intuitive, I am told, than most professionally available packages as this has been designed by the kind of people who will use it.
But for newcomers there is a great tutorial on wiki that will see you from newbie to, well not exactly pro as the title suggests, but certainly able to start doing some simple modelling and animation within hours.
Persevere and you will be amazed by what you can create.

Still from Super3boy tutorial on You Tube.
Now while the text and screen shot tutorial is really great for stepping you through the processes to your animation, some people prefer a more visual medium. So I just want to show you this series of films on YouTube that address some of the more complex activities once you have your feet under the table. Super3boy has made a series of 26 video tutorials uncovering the many mysteries of Blender that I am finding incredibly useful. Start at number one and work your way through.
Pretty soon you will be Blending like a pro and posting your own short films on You Tube.

If 3D animation is a bit too much for you, you can still exercise your creativity in your every day correspondence. Do not get stuck in a rut with boring old fonts like Times New Roman and Arial - getfreefonts.info instead. I love the quirky selection of fonts on these pages, that are sure to brighten up any letter, e-mail or presentation. Tantrum Tongue, BubbleBath, Easily Amused - they have great names too.

You can search the fonts alphabetically then browse through the pages until you spot something that suits. There are 2,500 fonts to choose from, with the sample text displayed beside each download link so you can see what you are getting. Simple and functional, this site delivers exactly what you would expect with the minimum of fuss. Lovely.

Still from Throw Me

This site is well worth a visit as long as you have some time to spare, I found it incredibly hard to drag myself away.

Start by swinging your mouse back and forth to build up momentum and when you are ready to throw, hit the space bar to see the little ... what would you call that? A ball with an eye? Anyway, whatever it is, it does not half fly. Keep your hand over the space bar as you get the chance to boost your flight occasionally if your eyeball lands on a cloud - the longer you leave it to relaunch the little fella, the less powerful the boost.
Your go ends when he hits the ground and will fly no more - but use your space bar again and you have a limited amount of stamina to give him a lift and hopefully hook onto one of the cranes along the hillside, which gives you another chance to launch him into outer space.
